Our Credit Union Story
In mid 1971, Fr. Sean Higgins took the initiative in setting up a study group with the assistance of three very prominent Credit Union directors from Galway - namely - J.F. King, B. Matthews and S. Diviney. In December that year such was the enthusiasm and vision of Fr. Higgins that we were all convinced that Credit Union was the way forward. From That study group the first Board of Directors were formed as follows: Fr. Higgins, Kathleen Flannelly (Secretary), Christina Geraghty (Treasurer), Tom Dolan, Willie Collins, Malachy Mooney, Sean Garvey, Christy McGrath, John Duggan, Sean Connolly and Pat Lyons.
The Credit Union opened for membership on the 16th January 1972 in a temporary Office provided by Malachy Mooney in his premises. On the 12th October 1986, the Official Opening and blessing of our current offices were performed by ILCU President Frank Canny and the Archbishop of Tuam, Most Rev. Dr. Cunnane.
This year, the Credit Union has grown to over €22 million in assets.
In Ireland over three million members have recognized the value of credit unions, and have savings €15 billion euro with their credit unions. There are thousands employed in the sector and many more thousands are volunteers involved in the movement.
This year is our 45th year of operation.
